When we were growing up in the 60s, Portsoy galas were held in the playing fields. They were always a big attraction. Lorries, usually from Barclays, were kitted out in the theme of their competitors and went around Portsoy for everyone to see.
The stage was beside the pivie where we had the Gala Queen crowned and then helped to give out prizes – fancydress for a child then was a must and nothing too grand .
Other gala’s included the swimming gala where we had swimming races, diving off the spring board and high board, synchronized swimming – and lots more. We had our annual dance that was held in the town hall and that was when we got our certificates and prizes
